Overall, the dollar value of crude oil imports for all importing countries fell by -22.9% since 2014 when crude oil purchases were valued at $1.532 trillion. Year over year, imported crude oil expanded in value by 31.7% from $897.3 billion for 2017. Prior to December 2015, crude oil exports were restricted to: (1) crude oil derived from fields under the State waters of Cook Inlet of Alaska; (2) Alaskan North Slope crude oil; (3) certain domestically produced crude oil destined for Canada; (4) shipments to U.S. territories; and (5) California crude oil to Pacific Rim countries. [1] Many countries also export oil , and some export more oil than they import. Crude oil exports of about 2.98 MMb/d accounted for 35% of total gross petroleum exports in 2019. The resulting total net petroleum imports (imports minus exports) were about 0.53 MMb/d in 2019.
